How to Back Out Sales Tax (Reverse Tax Guide)

How to back out sales tax from a total: the reverse sales tax formula, worked examples at Ohio rates, and the mistake that overstates your tax every time.

You're staring at a receipt for an expense report or a tax return, and you have the total paid. Now you just need the pre-tax price. It seems so simple. Most of us just grab our phone, take the total, and multiply it by the tax rate. But if you do that, your answer is wrong. Backing out sales tax requires division, not multiplication. Getting this wrong skews every number downstream and will drive your accountant insane. Let's look at the actual math, plus the fastest way to solve it without breaking a sweat.

The Reverse Sales Tax Formula

Because sales tax is added on top of the base price, the receipt total already has the tax baked in. To strip it out, we don't multiply. We divide.

Pre-Tax Price = Total ÷ (1 + Combined Rate)

Sales Tax = Total − Pre-Tax Price

Let's say your total is $108.00 and the tax rate is 8.00%. $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100.00 before tax. Subtract that from the total, and you're left with exactly $8.00 in tax.

Why You Can't Just Multiply

If you multiply that $108 total by 8%, you get $8.64. That is almost 8% too much. Why? Because the receipt total isn't the base number the tax was calculated on; the pre-tax price is. When you multiply the total, you are literally taxing the tax. Always divide first.

The Trench Truth: I wanted to build this calculator and write these guides because Ohio sales tax is a labyrinth designed to trip up small businesses. The state's documentation is written in dense legalese that doesn't help an entrepreneur who is just trying to run their business. "Compliance is cheaper than an audit." Tax shouldn't be an afterthought or something you "figure out at the end of the year." By treating sales tax compliance as a foundational pillar of your business operations, you protect your hard-earned margins and eliminate the existential dread of a state audit.

The Easy Way Out

Use the Right County Rate

Ohio's combined rate decides exactly how much tax is hidden inside a total. The exact same $100 receipt breaks down completely differently depending on the county. Find the combined rate for your county first, then divide. If it's an online order, use the rate for the delivery address. Ohio uses destination-based sourcing.

When There's No Tax to Back Out

If your receipt is for tax-exempt items like groceries or prescriptions, there is no tax hiding inside the total. The pre-tax price is exactly what you paid. Reverse math only applies when tax was actually charged.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the original price before tax? Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. At a 7% rate, divide by 1.07.

Can I just subtract the tax percentage from the total? No. Subtracting 8% of the total removes too much money. You must divide by 1.08 to get the true pre-tax base.

What rate should I use? Use the combined state-plus-county rate for where the transaction occurred, which ranges from 6.50% to 8.00% across Ohio.
