Why Ohio Sales Tax Penalizes the Unprepared
State audits and local rate shifts create silent liabilities that compound month after month.
Missing Exemption Certificates
Under Ohio law, all sales are legally presumed taxable until proven exempt. Missing, incomplete, or unsigned certificates are consistently cited by CPAs and state auditors as a leading cause of unexpected audit assessments.
Manual County Splits on UST-1
The Ohio Business Gateway requires businesses to partition gross sales, exempt sales, and tax collected county by county. Vendors selling across Ohio waste hours manually crunching multi-county schedules every return.
Rate Changes You Hear About Too Late
Ohio counties and transit authorities enact rate adjustments throughout the year. If your POS or billing system doesn't reflect the new rate immediately on the effective date, the vendor is held strictly liable for the shortfall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Ohio Sales Tax Pro platform and beta access.
Is Ohio Sales Tax Pro really free during the beta?
Yes. All five modules—including county rate alerts, the STEC exemption certificate vault, UST-1 filing prep, and the multi-client accountant dashboard—are 100% free with no credit card required throughout the public beta.
Does this platform provide legal or certified tax advice?
No. Ohio Sales Tax Pro is an automated software and compliance management system. While built on verified statutory rules (R.C. 5739) and reconciled directly against Ohio Department of Taxation data, it does not replace legal counsel or an individual consultation with a certified CPA.
Where do your Ohio tax rates come from?
Our rate engine is reconciled directly against official Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) rate reports and The Finder database, covering all 88 counties, transit authorities (such as COTA and GCRTA), and local taxing jurisdictions.
How does the exemption certificate tracker work under Ohio law?
Under Ohio Revised Code 5739.03, all sales are presumed taxable until a valid certificate is obtained. While blanket certificates (STEC-B) do not carry a mandatory statutory expiration date, ODT auditors require them to be fully completed with all required elements (O.A.C. 5703-9-03) and kept in good faith. Our platform helps vendors stay audit-ready by tracking review cycles, flagging incomplete data elements, and managing 120-day notice compliance.
How does the filing-prep assistant help with the Ohio Business Gateway?
When filing your UST-1 return on the Ohio Business Gateway or OH|TAX portal, the state requires sales and tax collected to be split county by county. Our assistant aggregates your transactions and generates the exact county-by-county figures and formatted schedules required for rapid, error-free filing.
Can accounting and bookkeeping firms manage multiple Ohio clients?
Yes. The accountant workspace allows CPA and bookkeeping firms to manage compliance for all of their Ohio client accounts from a single dashboard, generate audit-ready summary PDFs, and monitor client filing deadlines.
How is my business and customer data kept secure?
Tenant data is isolated using enterprise Row Level Security (RLS) in dedicated database partitions. Exemption certificates and sales files are stored in private, encrypted cloud storage accessed exclusively through short-lived signed URLs.
