Ohio Sales Tax Rate API

Welcome to the Ohio Sales Tax Rate API documentation. Our high-performance platform provides exact, real-time sales tax rate calculations, multi-tier statutory breakdowns, and split-county ZIP resolution for point-of-sale (POS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), and e-commerce billing engines.

Every rate returned is continuously reconciled against the Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) — The Finder and backed by statutory origin-sourcing rules under Ohio R.C. § 5739.033, ensuring 100% audit-proof compliance across all 88 Ohio counties.

Core Platform Capabilities

Three-Tier Statutory Rate Decomposition

Ohio sales tax is not a flat number. Our engine transparently breaks down every rate into its constituent legal levies:

  • State Base Rate: 5.75% mandatory statewide baseline under Ohio R.C. § 5739.02.
  • County Permissive Levies: Piggyback tax between 0.50% and 1.50% enacted by county boards under Ohio R.C. § 5739.021.
  • Regional Transit Authorities (RTA): Transit taxes enacted under Ohio R.C. § 306.70 (e.g., COTA in Franklin County at 1.00%, WRTA in Mahoning County, Laketran in Lake County).
Smart Multi-County Split ZIP Handling

Over 530 Ohio ZIP codes straddle county boundary lines. Querying a split ZIP without county context leads to compliance violations:

  • Unambiguous ZIPs: Returned immediately with 100% confidence.
  • Ambiguous Split ZIPs: The API returns ambiguous: true with a list of candidate counties, their individual rates, and prompts for a street address to resolve via US Census Bureau boundaries.
Date-Effective Evaluation (Past & Future)

Schedule transactions in the past or evaluate upcoming quarterly enactments:

  • Historical rate boundaries are preserved back to statutory inception.
  • Upcoming rate adjustments (such as quarterly increases enacted with 60-day ODT notice) automatically take effect on their legal effective date.
Statutory Origin-Sourcing by Default (R.C. 5739.033)

Unlike generic destination-only engines, our API explicitly flags whether an intrastate transaction is subject to origin sourcing (vendor business address) or destination sourcing (remote out-of-state sellers with economic nexus).
