Tax is charged on the $29.77 taxable subtotal, not the whole basket. Per-line tax is that single figure allocated across the taxable rows, so the lines add up to the total exactly β€” the same result a register reaches.

What Ohio taxes on a shopping trip

Ohio charges a 5.75% state rate plus a county permissive rate, and applies the combined figure to the taxable portion of your purchase only. The exemptions below are the ones that decide most receipts.

  • General merchandise β€” taxable. Taxable at the combined county rate.
  • Groceries (unprepared food) β€” exempt. Exempt β€” unprepared food for human consumption.
  • Prepared or hot food β€” taxable. Taxable β€” preparation removes the food exemption.
  • Prescription drugs β€” exempt. Exempt β€” dispensed on a prescription.
  • Over-the-counter medicine β€” taxable. Taxable β€” no prescription, no exemption.

The practical consequence: two people paying the same county rate can face very different effective rates. A basket that is mostly unprepared food is taxed on a small fraction of its total, while the same spend on general merchandise is taxed on all of it. For the rules behind each line, see is food taxable in Ohio, Ohio restaurant sales tax, and what is taxable in Ohio.

How the receipt is worked out

  1. Each line is priced at unit price Γ— quantity.
  2. Lines are split into a taxable subtotal and an exempt subtotal by category.
  3. The county's combined rate is applied once, to the taxable subtotal β€” the way an Ohio register computes a transaction.
  4. That single tax figure is allocated back across the taxable lines by largest remainder, so the itemised rows sum to the total to the cent.

Receipt calculator questions

Ohio exempts unprepared food and prescription drugs. Everything else on a normal shopping trip β€” general merchandise, prepared or hot food, over-the-counter medicine β€” is taxable at your county's combined rate. That is why a grocery run can carry an effective tax rate well under the headline county rate: the tax is charged on the taxable subtotal only, not the basket total.

On the whole receipt. Ohio vendors apply the rate to the taxable subtotal for the transaction, which is what a register tape shows. This calculator does the same: one tax figure for the basket, then allocated across the taxable lines so the itemised rows add up to the total exactly.

No. Preparation removes the food exemption. Cold, unprepared food from the same shop is exempt; the same food sold heated, or as a meal for immediate consumption, is taxable. This is the single most common surprise on an Ohio grocery receipt.

Yes. Only drugs dispensed on a prescription are exempt. Painkillers, cold remedies, and vitamins bought off the shelf are taxable general merchandise.

It stays in your own browser. The basket is kept in local storage on your device so a reload or a second trip does not lose it, and nothing you type is sent to a server β€” the whole calculation runs client-side.

The county where the sale happens, which for an over-the-counter purchase is the county the shop is in. Ohio has no city-level sales tax, so the county rate is the whole story for a shopping basket. Motor vehicles are the exception β€” those follow the county where you register the vehicle.
