Ohio Sales Tax Due Dates 2026 + Filing Guide
Every 2026 Ohio sales tax due date, how filing frequency is assigned, how to file the UST-1, and the new $750 cap on the timely-filing discount.
You remember the 15th, the 20th, the last day of the month. Ohio picked none of those. It picked the 23rd, and it applies the same date whether you file monthly or twice a year. Miss it and the penalty lands on a return that may show almost no tax owed. Here is every 2026 date, how your frequency is set, and the discount rule that changed this January.
The Rule in One Line
Ohio sales tax returns and payments are due on the 23rd day of the month following the end of your filing period.
That is it. There is no separate payment deadline to track — ODT wants the return and the money on the same day.
When the 23rd falls on a weekend or a legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.
2026 Ohio Sales Tax Due Dates
| Period covered | Filing type | Due date |
|---|---|---|

| January 2026 | Monthly | Monday, February 23, 2026 |
| February 2026 | Monthly | Monday, March 23, 2026 |
| March 2026 | Monthly | Thursday, April 23, 2026 |
| April 2026 | Monthly | Saturday, May 23, 2026 → next business day |
| May 2026 | Monthly | Tuesday, June 23, 2026 |
| June 2026 | Monthly | Thursday, July 23, 2026 |
| January – June 2026 | Semi-annual | Thursday, July 23, 2026 |
| July 2026 | Monthly | Sunday, August 23, 2026 → next business day |
| August 2026 | Monthly | Wednesday, September 23, 2026 |
| September 2026 | Monthly | Friday, October 23, 2026 |
| October 2026 | Monthly | Monday, November 23, 2026 |
| November 2026 | Monthly | Wednesday, December 23, 2026 |
| December 2026 | Monthly | Saturday, January 23, 2027 → next business day |
| July – December 2026 | Semi-annual | Saturday, January 23, 2027 → next business day |
Three dates in this cycle land on a weekend: May 23, August 23 and the January 23, 2027 close-out. Those are the ones that catch filers who schedule a payment for "the 23rd" and never look again. Note that the Monday after May 23, 2026 is Memorial Day, so that deadline rolls two days rather than one.
How Your Filing Frequency Is Decided
You do not pick your frequency. ODT assigns it, and it is driven by how much tax you remit.
| Frequency | Who files it | Threshold | Due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Vendors, transient vendors, out-of-state sellers, direct pay permit holders, consumer's use accounts | The default | 23rd of the following month |
| Semi-annual | Vendors, out-of-state sellers, transient vendors | Liability under $1,200 per six-month period | 23rd of the month after the period closes |
| Quarterly | Direct pay permit holders, consumer use tax accounts | Under $15,000 quarterly liability | 23rd of January, April, July, October |
| Electronic payment required | Any taxpayer | Annual liability above $75,000 | Same dates, but the payment must be electronic |
Two points worth pinning down, because they are the ones people get backwards:
Quarterly filing is not available to ordinary vendors. It is for consumer use tax accounts and direct pay permit holders. If you hold a vendor's license and someone tells you to file quarterly, check the account type before you believe it.
The $75,000 rule is about how you pay, not when. A business over $75,000 in annual liability files on exactly the same dates; it simply has to pay electronically.
How to File
Paper is not an option. All vendors must file electronically regardless of sales volume. Only consumers use taxpayers keep a choice.
The forms. Vendors file the universal sales tax return, UST-1. Consumers use tax goes on UUT-1.
The channels.
- OH|TAX eServices — the primary route, and the one ODT now leads with. You create an account first (FEIN or SSN, business contact details, primary user details), then file returns, make payments and manage the account from the portal. Data-file uploads are supported inside the UST-1 and UUT-1 transaction.
- A Certified Service Provider — a third party authorised to automate collection and filing, submitting a Simplified Electronic Return through Streamlined Sales Tax. Worth it once you file in several states.
- TeleFile, (800) 697-0440 — a touch-tone route for a county vendor's license filing for a single county. You will need the 8-digit account number, the 2-digit TIN, the period end date as mmddyyyy, your county code and a completed TeleFile worksheet. It returns a 12-digit confirmation number once signed.
Payment. ACH debit through the portal, credit card via ACI Payments (a convenience fee applies), or ACH credit registered with the Treasurer of State on (877) 338-6446.
Overpaid? You have four years from the payment to file a refund claim, on form ST-AR. Interest may be added where the payment is later found to have been made in error.
Registration itself is a separate exercise, covered step by step in the Ohio vendor's license guide.
The Timely Filing Discount — and the New $750 Cap
File on time and pay in full, and Ohio lets you keep 0.75% of the tax due under R.C. 5739.12. That has been the rule for years.
It changed on January 1, 2026. House Bill 96 caps the discount at $750 per vendor's license for each month covered by the return, for returns required to be filed on or after that date. ODT set out the mechanics in information release ST 2025-02.
Three things follow from it.
Small filers are untouched. A semi-annual vendor with $1,500 of tax for January through June earns $11.25. The cap for a six-month return is $750 × 6 = $4,500. The cap never binds.
Multi-location filers get a cap per licence. A business with three vendor's licences filing one consolidated monthly return has a cap of $750 × 3 = $2,250 for that month. At $200,000 of monthly tax the calculated discount is $1,500, still under the cap. At $400,000 the calculated discount would be $3,000 and the business keeps $2,250.
Motor vehicles are carved out entirely. The cap does not apply to the sale or lease of motor vehicles, so a dealer remitting at titling keeps the full 0.75%. A dealer's parts and service tax is capped, which means a single dealership can have both treatments on one return. When reported liability exceeds $100,000, ODT's system asks whether any taxable sales come from leasing motor vehicles; answering accurately is what excludes those sales from the cap calculation.

Filing When You Made No Sales
A vendor's license creates a filing obligation, not a sales obligation. If you had no taxable sales, you still file a zero return, on time, for every period.
Missed zero returns are one of the most common enforcement triggers in Ohio, precisely because they feel like nothing. A dormant seasonal business that stops filing over the winter accumulates late-filing penalties on returns that would each have shown $0.
If you are closing the business, cancel the licence rather than letting the returns lapse. Both the Gateway and TeleFile can do it.
Penalties, and What They Attach To
Ohio can assess a penalty for filing late, for paying late, and interest on the underlying tax. The three are separate, which is why a late return with a timely payment still generates a bill.
The bigger exposure is not the penalty. It is the assessment behind it. Sales tax is a pass-through liability: money you collected as an agent of the state. Tax you failed to collect because you applied the wrong county rate, or accepted an incomplete exemption certificate, comes out of the business rather than the customer.
That is where a filing problem turns into an audit problem. The mechanics of that process, and what auditors sample, are in the Ohio sales tax audit guide.
Getting the Return Right Before You Send It
The deadline is the easy half. The return has to be right too.
- County allocation. The UST-1 reports taxable sales by county. Get the sourcing rule right first: an Ohio vendor selling to an Ohio consumer sources to its own location under R.C. 5739.033(B)(1), while out-of-state sellers and marketplace facilitators source to the customer. The county rate table has the rate once you know which county to report.
- Exempt sales. Every exempt sale on the return should have a completed certificate behind it. See Ohio sales tax exemption certificates.
- Use tax. Tax you owe on your own untaxed purchases is a separate obligation from tax you collect. See Sales Tax vs. Use Tax in Ohio.
- Nexus. If you sell into Ohio from outside it, confirm you should be filing at all: Ohio sales tax nexus for online sellers.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Ohio sales tax due? Ohio sales tax is due on the 23rd day of the month following the end of your filing period. Monthly filers report the preceding month; semi-annual filers report the preceding six months, which means July 23 and January 23. When the 23rd falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.
Is Ohio sales tax filed monthly or semi-annually? Monthly is the default. Semi-annual filing may be authorised for vendors and sellers whose tax liability is under $1,200 per six-month period. The Ohio Department of Taxation assigns your frequency when you register; you do not choose it yourself.
What form is used to file Ohio sales tax? Vendors file the universal sales tax return, form UST-1. Consumers use tax is reported on form UUT-1. All vendors must file electronically regardless of sales volume, through OH|TAX eServices, a Certified Service Provider, or by TeleFile for an eligible single-county licence.
What is Ohio's timely filing discount? A vendor who files the return and pays in full by the due date may keep 0.75% of the tax due. For returns required to be filed on or after January 1, 2026, House Bill 96 caps that discount at $750 per vendor's license for each month covered by the return. The cap does not apply to the sale or lease of motor vehicles.
Do I have to file an Ohio sales tax return if I had no sales? Yes. Once you hold a vendor's license, a return is due for every period whether or not you made taxable sales. A zero return still has to be filed on time, and missed zero returns are a common source of late-filing penalties.
What happens if my Ohio sales tax liability is over $75,000 a year? Taxpayers with more than $75,000 in annual tax liability must pay electronically. The filing dates do not change — it is a requirement about the payment method, not a different filing frequency.
Before the return, get the collection right. The Ohio sales tax calculator gives you the combined rate and the tax due for any county, so what you charge matches what you remit.
Due dates, filing thresholds and channels are taken from the Ohio Department of Taxation's How to File Sales Tax guidance and its due-dates schedule. This guide is general information, not tax advice for a specific business.
