Vinton County How Ohio Taxes a Vehicle Purchase

Ohio taxes a vehicle at the combined rate of the county where you register it, not where you buy it. Under Ohio RC 5739.01, when you trade in a vehicle at a licensed dealer, the trade-in allowance reduces the taxable base for BOTH new and used vehicle purchases. You only pay tax on the difference. A flat $15 title fee applies on top. Note: the trade-in deduction does not apply to private-party (non-dealer) sales.
Taxable Base = Purchase Price − Trade-In Allowance
Sales Tax = Taxable Base × Combined County Rate

Example: A $30,000 car in Franklin County (8.00%) with a $10,000 trade-in has a taxable base of $20,000: $20,000 × 0.08 = $1,600 in tax. Without a trade-in, you'd pay $30,000 × 0.08 = $2,400. The $10,000 trade-in saves you $800 in tax regardless of whether the car is new or used.

Vinton County Quick Facts

  • Vehicle sales tax follows the exact county where you register the car, which is typically your county of residence.

  • Ohio's certificate-of-title fee is a flat $15.
